New Embraer jets for London City

BA buys 11 for short haul routes

The future of jet operation at London City Airport (LCY) has been secured with the imminent arrival of Embraer 170 and 190 jets.

These brand new craft from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer will enter service with BA City Flyer (BA's LCY-based division) next October.

They will gradually replace the airline's existing BAe146 jets which operate both domestic and European services from LCY.

The four-engined BAe146 is the mainstay of jet operations at LCY.

It is one of a handful of jets which can cope with LCY's short runway and restricted approach paths.

But this plane, which has been operating into LCY since 1991, is getting long in the tooth and, given its age, it will have to retire in the near future.

It's not particularly fuel efficient and many passengers find its cabin (especially when configured six across 3-3) rather cramped.

Says Richard Gooding, LCY's ceo, said: "The BAe146 has served the airport well but it's now time to turn our attention to the future and to the aircraft types which will succeed it."

The E170 has already been approved to operate into and out of LCY. Its larger E190 sister (which has a longer fuselage is this week undergoing "type approval" at LCY). Both craft are twin-engined and so are quieter and burn less fuel.

"Passengers will find the cabin noise level midway between an Airbus A320 and a B737," Luiz Sergio Chiessi, Embraer's VP for market intelligence, said.

The E170/E190s were designed from the outset to operate out of LCY.

They can cope with all existing routes from LCY which means that, with a full payload, these craft could reach Oslo or Stockholm in the north, Warsaw or Vienna in the east or Rome or Madrid in the south.

Embraer has sold many hundreds of the E170/E190s to 51 airlines in 34 countries.

Here in Europe, BA is a customer (it has ordered 11) along with Air France KLMKoninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij (Royal Aviation Company) the flag carrier of the Netherlands and a good example of how acronyms can aid simple discourse. and Lufthansa. All use LCY.

Depending on the configuration, the E170/E190s can seat between 70 and 122 passengers in a four across (2-2) layout.

Peter Simpson, MD of BA City Flyer, said that its Embraers will accommodate 76 passengers for the E170 version with the longer E190 seating 98.

Flights will be operated in a regular Club Europe and economy class layout with a moveable curtain.

BA's initial Embrear routes from LCY are expected to be Edinburgh and Amsterdam.

Remember when London City Airport's disingenuous Chief Executive Richard Gooding said there wouldn't be bigger planes at London City Airport?

The Embraer E-190 is a bigger plane, and is expected to be operating at London City Airport. This is to replace the RJ-100's and RJ-85's that currently fly in and out of London City Airport for BA and other carriers. The RJ series of plane is also the plane that had the crash landing incident back in Feb 2009 when the front landing gear collapsed from a hard landing. This it seems is not uncommon if you go to You Tube and type in "London City Airport hard landings". These are only the ones that have been filmed, how many more have there been? The Airbus 318 is the other new larger, noiser Jet that British Airways hope to be using for first class flights to New York at the end of this year.

FIRST CLASS FLIGHTS - FIRST CLASS POLLUTION

These planes will only make East & South East London worse than they already are, because of London City Airport and their spinning lying machine
