Emirates has announced it will start flights from Dubai to Dakar in September.

From September 1, Emirates will fly five times weekly to the west African destination, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Flight EK 797 will leave Dubai at 9.55am, arriving into Dakar's Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport at 4pm. The return flight will depart Dakar at 5.40pm, arriving into Dubai at 7.15 the following morning.

The airline will use a three-class A340-300 aircraft, with 12 first, 42 business and 213 economy class seats.

Dakar will be the airline's 19th African destination, after the launch of Durban and Luanda late last year.

It will also be the first direct service between the United Arab Emirates and Senegal. There are currently no direct flights to Dakar from the UK.

The Emirates Group has growing ties with Senegal. It announced a joint agreement in November to assist in the start up of Senegal Airlines, which is due to start operating later this year.

Emirates will provide commercial support, technical expertise, training and aviation-related goods and services to the new carrier.

Dubai and the UAE also share an open skies agreement.

Karim Wade, senior minister for the Senegal's ministry of international cooperation, national planning, air transport and infrastructure, said: "This new route will deliver a significant boost to our nation's trade, commerce and tourism industries."
