Starwood Hotels and Resorts has launched a set of guidelines for its north American properties to encourage greener meeting practices.

The move is in response to increased demand, according to Sandy Swider, Starwood's VP for global citizenship.

"There's already a strong sensitivity toward sustainability concerns from meeting planners and they appreciate the programs we've put in place," she said.

"We think the next generation of meeting planners and attendees will simply expect green practices and sustainability initiatives as a given for meetings and facilities."

The scheme involves five key parts: paperless meeting planning, sustainable meeting services, sustainable foor and beverage practices, impact assessment tools and socially conscious activities.

For example, using potted plants instead of fresh-cut flowers.

Meetings organisers will also be able to assess the impact of a meeting or event on the environment, with Starwood's meeting impact report.

The hotel group plans to roll out the initiative globallly next year across all its brands, which include St Regis, W, Le Meridian and Sheraton.
