Union calls end to Frankfurt Airport strike

Air traffic workers at Frankfurt Airport are to end their strike on Wednesday evening but cancellations will continue into Thursday.

Members of the GDF union had originally planned to extend their strike at the airport until 23.00 local time on Friday.

But the union, which is in dispute with airport owner Fraport over pay, is now due to end the latest industrial action later today after Fraport agreed to go back to the negotiating table.

Lufthansa, which has had to cancel hundreds of flights over the last week, said there would still be cancellations for the rest of Wednesday and on Thursday “due to operational reasons”.

“Lufthansa welcomes that the air traffic controllers union (GDF) has ended their strike action at Frankfurt Airport,” the airline said in a statement. “Lufthansa will do everything to return back to normal flight operations.”

Fraport said that members of GDF would resume work from 22.00 local time on Wednesday.

Fraport executive board chairman Dr Stefan Schulte said: “In the interests of the passengers, airlines and our airport staff, we welcome the resumption of talks to seek new solutions at the negotiating table.”
