Unite has started sending out strike ballot papers to more than 6,000 BAA workers in a dispute over pay.

Unions Prospect and PCS are also balloting BAA staff members on industrial action.

Brendan Gold and Brian Boyd, Unite's national officers for civil aviation, said: "BAA's measly pay offer is nothing short of confrontational.

"Unite and BAA have been in talks for months and we are prepared to continue talking. A negotiated agreement can be reached if the company is prepared to be fairer and more realistic."

According to Unite, BAA staff accepted a pay freeze in 2009, and this year are being offered a 1.5% conditional increase. Staff will also not receive a summer bonus as the company missed its performance targets by 3%.

PCS, Unite and Prospect's ballots will close on August 12.

I think this is ridiculous,

I think this is ridiculous, striking in the current climate. At least they are getting a pay rise when most of the country is getting pay cuts or even made redundant. There are plenty unemployed people out there with obviously a lot more intelligence, who would be willing to do their jobs for less money. Come on Unite and BAA staff a get a grip, the public has now had enough of your ridiculous actions. It is about time, we the public make Unite and the BAA staff aware that we do not support them on their selfish actions!!
