Oman Air, the national airline of the Sultanate of Oman, has announced plans to start non-stop services to Gatwick, providing its first direct link between the capital Muscat and London.

The airline will operate dual class daily flights with Airbus A330-300 aircraft (6 days) and A310-300s (Sunday), between the two points.

Oman CEO, Air Ziad Karim Al Haremi, said: ”The introduction of the daily service from London to Muscat will provide travellers with the flexibility not currently available through any other service provider in Oman.”

”Oman Air's decision to start operations to London comes close on the heels of our recent announcement to expand services beyond our current 21 destinations and clearly signals our expansion-based strategy in the region.”

Gulf Air also flies the route and has done so for many years. It remains to be seen if it will continue with its current operation.

When faced with a similar situation, at Abu Dhabi with another new carrier, Etihad, the end result was a dignified withdrawal of services. British Airways also serves Muscat but not non-stop.

Originally called Oman Air Services, the airline was established as a small regional operation in 1981 and began scheduled services in 1993. Currently it flies to more than 21 destinations with a fleet of new generation Boeing 737-700, 737-800 and ATR-42 aircraft.

September will see flights to Bangkok, Damascus, Jeddah, Karachi, Lahore and Riyadh.

Oman lies at the tip of the Arabian peninsular with Iran across the Gulf of Oman to the north east and with the Arabian Sea to the south west. It borders the United Arab Emirates on the northwest, Saudi Arabia on the west, and Yemen on the southwest.
